"After a record-setting showing last year, overall representation of LGBTQ characters on television has decreased from 637 characters to 596 characters while racial diversity has increased to more than 50 percent of those characters being people of color.
This is according to the 18th edition of Where We Are on TV, a new report from media watchdog group GLAAD that analyzes the number of LGBTQ regular and recurring characters on scripted primetime broadcast, scripted primetime cable and scripted series on the eight major streaming platforms that aired between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023." "Lawmakers in Michigan have passed a bill to expand civil rights protections to the LGBTQ community, with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) expected to sign the measure into law when it reaches her desk.
The vote in the Democratic-led state House on Wednesday, which passed the bill with a 64-45 margin, would codify protections from discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing and other areas." "Iowans by the hundreds rallied Sunday at the center of Iowa government to protest legislation targeting the rights of LGBTQ citizens.
Nearly a thousand parents, students, educators, faith leaders, community organizers and elected officials attended the Sunday Rally to Resist on the West steps of the Iowa State Capitol.
"Iowans have had enough. We understand that our friends, neighbors, and family members are under attack and their rights are being stripped away. And Iowans are unified against anti-LGBTQ bills," a Progress Iowa news release said.
"No politician has the right to tell us which bathroom to use, deny us medical care, dictate which pronouns to call ourselves, ban books and curriculum, roll back civil rights, deny adoption and foster care, do away with marriage equality, or call queer people obscene." "Hundreds of New York Times contributors and advocacy groups sent two coordinated open letters Wednesday accusing the paper of record of publishing biased articles about trans people.

"When I think back to coming of age as a queer man, I most remember the lack of “possibility models.” I had no idea what my life could look like.
I had never seen — in real life or media — positive reflections of what it meant to grow old as a member of the LGBT+ community. Growing up in the shadow of a generation of gay men who were lost to the AIDS epidemic, I longed for something that said: You can grow old. Life will be okay.
The challenge of generational isolation is common in today’s queer youth. Young queer people without positive role models are at much higher risk for “psychological distress” in their adolescence and depression in adulthood."
