"What do you want to be when you grow up? When some of New
York City’s media professionals were answering that venerable,
but fretful question, being gay and becoming a journalist were
not their first responses. . .
Northrop recounted her experiences of coming out and becoming
a journalist at a Tuesday panel discussion "Live Out Loud"
for gays working in the media to share their personal stories
with gay youths. The event . . . was the kick-off to a new series
to introduce youths to gay role models who are passionate about
their life, and are working to make a difference in the community,
says organizer Leo Preziosi. . . .
Preziosi says he hopes "Live Out Loud" foster [sic]
dialogue between gay adults and gay youths about growing up gay,
coming out, and overcoming feelings of isolation."
"Gay journalists trace career paths: Forum offers gay
youths a chance to learn how gay media professionals pursued
their goals." Sarah L Rasmusson. The New York Blade,

"As if facing the challenges of being gay and coming out
aren’t hard enough, four of Gotham’s gays
a Latina lesbian media professional, a lesbian songwriter with
brain cancer, an African-American gay man running a start-up not-for-profit,
and a Philippino gay choreographer who started his own dance company
are facing adversity and refusing to let it be their undoing.
. .
Overcoming obstacles has also been a bumpy personal and professional
road for Lauren Maclise, an out lesbian.
"I have leukemia that has progressed to brain cancer. .
. . I have managed to live my life with this cancer it
is not beating me, I am beating it," she told the crowd."
"Testing their mettle with adversity: Panelists tell tales
of overcoming life’s obtacles." Sarah L Rasmusson.
