Becoming More Visible

This fully developed curriculum will help your students explore why it’s important for LGBTQ youth and their allies to be visible in their school and community. These seven lessons explore issues ranging from developing a positive identity to building coalitions for implementing change. Each lesson includes discussion starters, learning activities, and group actions. We hope this exciting curriculum will encourage your LGBTQ and allied youth to become more visible!

LGBTQ students often struggle with issues of identity in ways their heterosexual classmates do not. Students may feel that they have to conform to a certain image to “fit” within the LGBTQ community. This lesson helps students both explore their identity and find community with their peers!

Homophobia and heterosexism can be huge hurdles in an LGBTQ student’s journey toward finding a positive sexual identity. This lesson challenges students to consider some of the obstacles they
may have to overcome as LGBTQ youth.

When youth act for LGBTQ causes, they are not “reinventing the wheel.” LGBTQ activists stand in a long tradition of fighting for civil rights. This les­son helps students realize that LGBTQ people have a long history of celebrating their identity and over­coming obstacles.

During this lesson, students will discuss the issues about which they are most passionate. They will begin to understand that many LGBTQ and allied people share the same passions. This lesson serves as a starting point for your group to take action in your school or community surrounding the issues you’re most passionate about.

It is incredibly important that LGBTQ youth not only be passionate about the issues that affect our community, but also be able to communicate their passions. This lesson shows students that they must be able to communicate their passions, ideas, opinions, and story effectively in order to gain support from others.

The LGBTQ community needs both strong leaders and dedicated supporters to act for change. While it’s important for youth to be strong leaders in their community, it’s also important that they find organizations that are already working in the community and offer their help. This lesson challenges students that simply talking about the issues we’re passionate about isn’t enough… we must also act on them!
